What a difference a day made at this year's NBA Players Association Top 100 Camp, which is being held this week at the University of Virginia's John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, VA.  The first day (Wednesday) was just a practice day and did not feature the plethora of NCAA Division I college coaches who were in attendance on the second day (yesterday).  The second day also included some late arrivals, including 6'9 Soph Patrick Baldwin from Sussex (Hamilton) WI and 6'9 Soph Michael Foster from Phoenix (Hillcrest Prep) AZ, both of whom are consensus top five-ranked rising juniors nationally, the games were much more intense, and a number of players who were mediocre at best the day before took their game to another level.  And right the top of list is 6'5 Jr MarJon Beauchamp from Seattle (Rainier Beach) WA, who didn't make our unpublished list of the top players in camp during the practice games, but now is the #1-ranked player and leading scoring in camp with a 21.0 ppg scoring average.  However, even more important, he was equally effective and shot the light out in both games, as is evident by the fact he is currently ranked #7 in field goal percentage with 16-23 field goals (69.6%) and among the leaders in 3-point shooting with 6-10 3-pointers (60.0%).

The other big story on the official first day of action at this year's camp is the fact that the center position is absolutely loaded, as is evident by the fact that 6'11 Jr Mady Sissoko from Mt. Pleasant (Wasatch Academy) UT, 6'10 Jr Day'Ron Sharpe from Winterville (South Central) NC, 6'10 Jr Dawson Garcia from Savage (Prior Lake) MN, and 7'0 Makur Maker from Orange (Lutheran) CA are four of our top-six ranked players in camp.  And, when we dig a little deeper, we also find that 7'0 Jr Mark Williams from Norfolk (Academy) VA, 6'9 Jr Eddie Lampkin from Katy (Morton Ranch) TX, 7'1 Soph Chet Holmgren from Minneapolis (Minnehaha Academy) MN, 6'10 Jr Cliff Omoruyi from Roselle (Catholic) NJ, and 7'0 Jr Efton Reid from Richmond (The Steward School) VA are ranked #15, #19, #25, #27, and #30 respectively in our Ranking of the Top 30 Players in Camp Regardless of Class and Position, which means that almost 30 percent of the top players in camp are big men.

We also look forward to seeing who wins the battle for bragging rights between 6'6 Soph Terrence Clarke from Wolfeboro (Brewster Academy) NH and 6'9 Soph Patrick Baldwin from Sussex (Hamilton) WI, who are widely regarded as the top two-ranked players nationally in the Class of 2021.  And, after the first day of official games, the edge goes to Clarke, who recently finished ranked #2 overall at the Pangos All-American Camp, is currently tied at #12 in scoring with a 13.0 ppg in this camp, and arguably has been the most consistent player in camp when one also incorporates Wedneday's two rounds of practice games into the equation.  Baldwin, on the other hand, was excellent in his first game with 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists, 7-14 field goals, and 2-6 3-pointers, but only had two points and three rebounds and was 1-6 from the field and 0-3 from behind the arc in his second game of the day.

Obviously who is hot and who is not will go a long way in determining who gets the nod between Clarke and Baldwin as the better player in both this camp and the Class of 2021 nationally.  In case you are unaware, more voters for the prestigious McDonald's All-American Team attend the NBA Players Association Top 100 Camp than any other event during the course of the entire year and, as a result, the same also should hold true with many of the other players when it comes time to make comparisons and provide analysis about what happens at this year's camp.  So stay tuned for all of the highlights and updated rankings overall and by position at the camp for the next several days via our web site and emails.  And, in accordance with NCAA rules and guidelines for scouting services, we will provide analysis of every player that we identify in our rankings in a follow up report early next week.
