If you wanted to get a head start on the future and see a plethora of the top rising juniors in the nation all at one venue, then the place to be over the weekend was the 2018 Pangos All-American Camp, which was held at Cerritos College in Norwalk, CA and featured 10 of the top 20-ranked players nationally in the Class of 2020. And right at the top of that list was 6'11 Soph Evan Mobley from Temecula (Rancho Christian) CA, who not only was the best player in camp, but also made a strong case for being the top player nationally in the Class of 2020. However, believe it or not, he did not take home camp MVP honors. Instead, for the second consecutive year that honor went to 6'11 Jr Charles Bassey from Louisville (Aspire Academy) KY. The problem is that Mobley might be too smooth and unselfish for his own good. He runs the court like a deer, has incredible length and athleticism, tremendous skills, and great nose for the ball, which allows him to be an excellent shot blocker, great rebounder, and terrific finisher. He also handles and passes extremely well for somebody his size, has an extremely high basketball IQ, and still has no idea just how good he is right now, as he finished tied for 16th in the camp in scoring with 12.5 ppg and ranked #6 in rebounding with 8.0 rpg. He also had 11 points, four rebounds, one blocked shot, one steal, and 5-5 field goals while playing against all of the top players in camp in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game and made one of the most impressive finishes that we've seen in a long time when he reached over the guy blocking him out on the boards, grabbed the ball high in air, and dunked it without getting called for a foul.
Mobley also is much quicker and more athletic than Bassey is right now due to the fact that Bassey has gotten bigger and stronger physically, but does not have the same amount of mobility, finesse, and athleticism that he did when we first saw him play nearly three years ago when he was a rising freshman at the 2015 John Lucas 40/40 Combine in Houston, TX. On the other hand, Bassey did win his head-to-head battle in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game against 6'11 Soph N'Faly Dante from Bel Aire (Sunrise Christian) KS, who is an outstanding rebounder and shot blocker and is in the equation when we start talking about the very elite players nationally in the Class of 2020, and he did finish tied for 10th in the camp in scoring with 14.0 ppg and led the camp in rebounding with 10.0 rpg. Bassey also has an excellent skill-set, which allows him to play both inside and outside, and he's got the natural talent necessary to be the leading candidate for National Player-of-the-Year honors in the Class of 2019. However, he wasn't even close to being in the same class with Mobley this weekend, which illustrates just how good we think Mobley is right now. And what makes all this even more scary is the fact that we still think Mobley has a long way to go before he reaches his full uptside and potential. In contrast, Bassey is much closer to being a finished product right now.
Right behind Mobley and Bassey was 6'5 Soph Anthony Edwards from Atlanta (Holy Spirit) GA and this strong physical athletic 2-guard, who makes a living attacking the rim and finishing though contact, finished tied as the leading scorer in camp with 17.3 ppg, plus he turned in two of the top individual scoring performances in the camp with 22 points in the afternoon session on Saturday and 21 points in the evening session on Saturday. Edwards also had 10 points, 3-5 field goals, and 2-2 3-pointers in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game and gets the nod as the best player in camp by Ronnie Flores, who publishes the Fab 50 National Team Ranking powered by Ballslife.com and also is the California Editor for the HOOP SCOOP. "He was the most consistent player in camp," says Flores. "He didn't have a bad game and consistency means a lot in this type of camp setting." It also looks like Edwards has really improved his outside shooting and, as a result, now must be regarded as one of the best players nationally in the Class of 2020. However, he may not have as much upside as some of the other players in this class due to the fact that he reclassified a year ago and has an age advantage.
The next guy on our list is the other half of the daily-double in the Mobley family, as the older brother finished tied at #7 in scoring with 14.8 ppg and ranked #3 in rebounding with 8.0 rpg, We've talking about 6'9 Jr Eric "Isaiah" Mobley from Temecula (Rancho Christian) CA, who also was the leading scorer with 14 points and 7-9 field goals and was the MVP for the winning team in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game. The older Mobley is a little bit shorter and doesn't have quite the same level of quickness, finesse, and athleticism that the younger brother brings to the table. However, he does have similar skills and he is much stronger physically, which makes him tougher in the post. And rounding out our top five-ranked players in camp is 6'7 Soph Scottie Barnes from Ft. Lauderdale (University School) FL and, despite only scoring two points and grabbing only four rebounds, he was the other MVP in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game. Instead, it was Barnes' unselfishness and passing skills that drew rave reviews, as he finished with seven assists and did a good job of getting his teammates involved in both the camp and the top game. Remember, Barnes has big time athleticism, is versatile enough to play anywhere from the one to the four, and is equally capable of stepping up and being a dominating force (i.e. when he earned tournament MVP honors at the City of Palms Classic) or being a good teammate and make those around him better (like he did in the top all-star game).
The biggest enigma on our entire list of the top players in camp has to be 6'11 Soph N'Faly Dante from Bel Aire (Sunrise Christian) KS. With his incredible length and athleticism, quickness around the basket, and ability to run the court, rebound and block shots, and be an intimidating presence in the post, he was as good as anybody that we saw on the first night of action. But he was pretty much missing in action with only two points and 1-2 field goals in the much anticipating match-up against the Mobley's in the 9:30 AM game on Sunday morning and put up similar numbers when matched up against 6'11 Jr Charles Bassey from Louisville (Aspire Academy) KY in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game. We don't know if he was hurt or just worn out, but this is a guy with extremely quick hands and feet, great quickness to the basket, and tremendous natural talent. As a matter of fact, we thought he was so good when we saw him earlier this spring at the NIKE EYBL's session that we were talking about Dante being one of the top players nationally in the Class of 2020. On the other hand, we thought 6'7 Jr Kahlil Whitney from Roselle (Catholic) NJ and 6'9 Jr Omar Payne from Kissimmee (Osceola) FL more than lived up to expectations and, as a result, we thought they deserved to be ranked as the #7 and #8-ranked players in camp. The former is an prototypical athletic 3-man with a great combination of strength, skills, athleticism and versatility and he is very adept at attacking the basket. and can also beat you with his outside shooting. The latter has a good combination of strength and athleticism, is a good rebounder and shot blocker, and he is not afraid to do the dirty work around the basket. And, as an added bonus, he showed us a nice jump hook shot in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game.
This next one may come as a surprise, but the fact that 6'4 Soph Jaden Springer from Mint Hill (Rocky River) NC finished ranked #3 in scoring with 17.0 ppg, tied for 14th in rebounding with 4.5 rpg, and tied for 6th in assists with 3.3 apg speaks for itself. Springer also has a great nose for the ball and excellent speed, quickness, and athleticism, which allows him to come up with more than his share of steals, make a living off transition, and use his body to absorb contact and finish at the rim. Also coming as a major surprise is the fact that the next two guys on our list - 6'6 Soph Johnny Juzang from North Hollywood (Harvard-Westlake) CA and 6'6 Soph Brandon Boston from Norcross (H.S.) GA - were both snubbed from playing in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game. However, Juzang more than made up for it with 21 points, 11 rebounds, 8-12 field goals, and 3-6 3-pointers in the Next 20 Cream of the Crop All-Star Game. Juzang also was clearly the best player on his camp team and he really impressed us with his speed, quickness, and athleticism, size for his position, excellent body control, and ability to both get to the basket and knock down the outside shot. He also knows how to compete, is becoming a better defender, and is good enough to be a legit top 50 player nationally in the Class of 2020. And the fact that's he's a great kid and an outstanding student are just added bonuses. The fact that Boston likes to pull the trigger might be an understatement, but, after being snubbed in the selection process from playing in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game. he finished with nine points, 4-8 field goals, and 1-2 3-pointers and clearly was the second best player in the second game. Boston also impressed us with his speed, quickness, and athleticism, explosiveness in transition and crafty moves to the basket, and deep range on his jump shot. He will need to get bigger and stronger physically, but he's got good size for his position, is talented enough to be a legitimate candidate for the McDonald's All-American Game a-year-and-a-half from now and, if he grows another couple of inches, which we suspect that he might, his upside and potential are off the chart.
We didn't get a chance to see 6'8 Jr Precious Achiuwa from Newark (St. Benedict's) NJ until he played in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game due to the fact that he switched teams. However, he finished with 11 points, four rebounds, and 6-11 field goals and was one of the better players in the top game. He has the size, skills, versatility, and athleticism to play both inside, but his bread-and-butter is using his quickness to finish around the basket and get more than his share of rebounds. He also has great body control, is very explosive in the court, and he's a match-up problem when both bigger and smaller guys attempt to guard him. Unfortunately there are other time when he has a tendency to be his own worst enemy, as consistency and bringing it every game are not always part of his forte. We also were impressed with the size, versatility, and athleticism of 6'8 Jr C.J. Walker from Orlando (Christian Prep) FL, who finished with 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, 5-8 field goals, and 1-2 3-pointers in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game. He also is extremely quick around the basket, is very aggressive on the boards, has a soft touch on his mid-range jumper, and isn't afraid to pull the trigger from behind the arc. On the other hand, he does have a tendency to be wild and out of control and, with that in mind, his crazy hair sends the perfect message. Another one of the unsung heroes in the camp was 6'3 Jr Tre Mann from The Villages (Villages School) FL and, although he will need to get bigger and stronger, he has good moves to the basket and is versatile enough to play either guard spot, as is evident by the fact that he finished ranked #5 in scoring with 16.0 ppg and tied for #7 in assists with 3.0 apg. It also was difficult not be enamored with the great leaping and ability and athleticism displayed by 6'10 Jr Drew Timme from Richardson (Pearce) TX. He will need to improve his outside shooting, but he did finish ranked #2 in camp in rebounding with 8.8 rpg and the competitive edge and the power that he brings to the table when he attacks the rim made him one of the most talked about players in camp.
The camp also had plenty of depth as 6'1 Soph Sharife Cooper from Powder Springs (McEachern) GA, 6'4 Soph Josh Christopher from Lakewood (Mayfair) CA, 6'2 Jr Tyson Etienne from Brookville (Long Island Lutheran) NY, 6'4 Jr P.J. Fuller from Seattle (Garfield) WA, and 6'5 Soph Kyree Walker from Phoenix (Hillcrest Academy) AZ all fall into the 15-20 range in camp. Cooper had a 27-point game, which was the highest individual scoring performance in the camp. plus he finished ranked #9 overall in scoring in the camp. However, he put up goose eggs in ooth scoring and assists and was 0-4 from the field when the bright lights came on in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game and, as a result, slipped some in our final rankings of the top players in camp. Christopher normally makes a living using his quickness and athleticism to get to the basket, knock down the outside shot, and light up a scoreboard. But this time around Christopher led the camp in passing with 7.0 apg and he backed that up with four assists in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game. Etienne has good ball handling and passing skills to go along with his excellent speed and quickness and ability to both get to the basket and knock down the outside shot, which he did to the tune of 17.3 ppg. And, in addition to being tied for 1st in scoring in camp, he also finished tied for 6th in assists with 3.3 apg. Fuller has big time talent and athleticism, but all too often has a tendency to be wild and out of control. However this time around he vindicated himself and was one of the better players in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game with 13 points, 4-5 field goals, and 3-3 3-pointers. Walker was snubbed from playing in the top all-star game, but he took it in stride and used his strength and athleticism to attack the basket and he finished with 11 points, two assists, and 3-5 field goals in the Next 20 Cream of the Crop All-Star Game. Walker also deserves bonus points for playing injured, but what really impressed everybody the most is the fact that he finished tied for 9th in the camp in assists with 3.0 apg and did a good job of setting up his teammates in the all-star game.
When we dig a little deeper, we find that guys like 6'8 Frosh Jonathan Kuminga from Huntington (Prep) WV, 6'5' Jr Cassius Stanley from Chatsworth (Sierra Canyon) CA, 6'3 Jr Chris Harris from Garland (South Garland) TX, 6'8 Jr Ismael Massoud from Granby (The MacDuffee) MA, and 6'10 Jr Kofi Cockburn from Middle Village (Christ the King) NY fall into the 21-25 range. Kuminga was not named to play in any of the all-star games, but he should have been due to the fact that we're talking about a bouncy athletic 4-man with good upper body strength, the versatility necessary to play both inside and outside, and a knack for finding ways to score, as is evident by the fact that he finished tied at #19 in scoring with 12.0 ppg. Stanley does what he always does, which is attempt to over handle it at times out on the perimeter and use his strength and athleticism to attack the basket and get his share of rebounds. Harris is another guy who was snubbed from playing in the top all-star game, but he more than made up for it with 11 points in the Next 20 Cream of the Crop All-Star Game and he finished tied at #19 in scoring in the camp. We also were impressed with Harris' upper body strength, ability to go coast-to-coast, and the fact that he isn't gun shy when it comes time to pull the trigger. Massoud will need to get bigger and stronger physically, but he is extremely bouncy, athletic, and explosive in transition, has a nice looking turnaround jumper, and was the camp's 4th leading scorer with 16.3 ppg, Cockburn is out of shape and did not play well most of the camp. However, he is the ultimate space-eater and he did a good job of being in the right spot to get more than his share of offensive rebounds, as he finished with 12 points, five rebounds, and 5-6 free throws in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game.
Next on our list in the 26-30 range are guys like 6'10 Soph Isaiah Todd from Richmond (John Marshall) VA, 6'6 Jr Jamie Jaquez from Camarillo (H.S.) CA, 6'5 Jr Charles Smith from Powder Springs (McEachern) GA, 6'3 Jr Gianni Hunt from Torrance (Bishop Montgomery) CA, and 6'10 Jr Antwan January from Santa Monica, CA. Todd should be ranked higher based on his combination of length, athleticism, skills, and natural talent, but lower based on his questionable attitude and the fact that he's not a tough customer and more often than not leaves you expecting more. Jaquez kind of got lost in the shuffle in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game. but he has deceptive athleticism, brings a competitive edge to the table, can both shoot and slash, and is an excellent early catch for UCLA. Smith impressed us with his strong upper body, powerful frame, and ability the basket, plus he rebounds well for his size, is a good defender, and he showed that he can hit the mid-range jumper. Hunt showed that he can shoot, slash, and run the show, as is evident by the fact that he finished tied for 2nd in assists with 6.5 apg and earned himself a spot in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game by being one of the better point guards in camp. January is just like his older brother, Anthony January (alias Tony December) in that he is lazy, lacks discipline, and doesn't like to go to school. However, he was the best player in the Bottom 20 Cream of the Crop All-Star Game. And, after finishing with 25 points, seven rebounds, 10-19 field goals, and 5-5 free throws in the all-star game and ending up being ranked #4 in rebounding in camp with a 7.5 rpg, there might be a glimmer of hope in terms of January having a chance of living up to his vast upside and potential.
And falling into the 31-40 range are 6'11 Jr Charles Coleman from Brookline (Dexter School) MA, 6'9 Soph Maddy Sissoka from Mt. Pleasant (Wasatch Academy) UT, 6'8 Jr Eric Dixon from Willow Grove (Abington) PA, 5'11 Soph Posh Alexander from Bronx (Our Savior Lutheran) NY, 6'7 Jr Donta Scott from Philadelphia (Imhotep Charter) PA, 6'9 Soph Jaemyn Brakefield from Huntington (Prep) WV, 6'1 Soph Chanse Robinson from Grambling (Lincoln Prep) LA, 6'8 Soph Dain Dainja from Brooklyn Park (Park Center) MN, 6'3 Jr Jaden Shackelford from Hesperia (H.S.) CA, and 6'10 Soph Xavier Foster from Oskaloosa (Community) IA. Coleman was regulated to duty in the Next 20 Cream of the Crop All-Star Game, where he finished with seven points and five rebounds. However, he has a good frame, sets more than his share of picks and screens, and scores, rebounds, and is active on the post. Sissoka might have been in a little over his head in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game, but we liked the way this long agile athletic 4-man runs the court, scores around the basket, and battles on the boards. Dixon is another guy who didn't shine in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game, but his incredible upper body strength, ability to score and get it done on the boards, and the fact that he's already verbally committed to Villanova made him very intriguing. Alexander is an athletic point guard with good ball handling and passing skills, an excellent feel for the game, and the ability to make a living using his speed and quickness to get to the basket and finish at the rim.
Scott can't shoot and his perimeter skills are limited, but it's hard not to like the way he competes, goes coast-to-coast, finishes through contact, and gets it done on the boards. Brakefield has amazing agility, coordination, mobility, and moves to the basket and he's a great combination of skills, athleticism, and natural talent. However, we're still trying to figure out how he was named to play in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game. And I was one of the seven people in the meeting picking the teams. Robinson will need to get bigger and stronger physically, but we were impressed with his speed and quickness, poise and willingness to get his teammates involved, and ability to knock down the outside shot. Dainja played his way onto this list with a strong performance in his final game on Sunday morning. He's not very skilled, but we're talking about a strong physical specimen with powerful moves to the basket and an aggressive nature on the boards. Shackelford is an athletic 2-guard who likes to pull the trigger and has deep range on his jump shot. And this was especially evident in the Bottom 20 Cream of the Crop All-Star Game, where he finished with 13 points and was 3-7 from behind the arc. Foster does have good skills and a lot of upside and potential, but he was too fragile and not a tough enough customer to match-up against some of the top big men in the nation and, as a result, only had four points and three rebounds in the Top 30 Cream of the Crop All-Star Game.
We also don't want to forget about guys like 6'7 Jr Max Agbonkpolo from Rancho Santa Margarita (Santa Margarita) CA, 6'1 Jr Kyky Tandy from Hopkinsville (University Heights) KY, 6'6 Jr Jonathan Salazar from Bellflower (St. John Bosco) CA, 6'4 Jr Tre Williams from Mt. Pleasant (Wasatch Academy) UT, 6'11 Jr Qudus Wahab from Oakton (Flint Hill) VA, 6'9 Soph Isaiah Cottrell from Las Vegas (Bishop Gorman) NV, 6'7 Soph Cade Cunningham from Arlington (Bowie) TX, 6'6 Jr Jalen Hill from Las Vegas (Clark) NV, 6'1 8th Grader Rickie Isaacs from Las Vegas, NV, and 6'7 Jr Jake Kyman from Rancho Santa Margarita (Santa Margarita) CA, all of whom belong in the 41-50 range. Agbonkpolo will need to get bigger and stronger physically, but we like his versatility, athleticism, silky smooth demeanor, ability to create his outside shot, and excellent shooting range. Tandy is more of a scorer than a facilitator and he did so to the tune of 21 points in his final game on Sunday morning, which ranked him among the top 10 individual scoring performances at the camp. Salazar is a classic tweener, but it's tough not to like the toughness and force that he brings to the table every time he takes the court and he's match-up problem around the basket. Williams is an athletic 2-guard with good upper body strength and, whether it be attacking the basket or knocking down the outside shot shot, this guy knows how to score.
Wahab has a good combination of length, athleticism, and strength in the post. But he was relegated to duty in the Next 20 Cream of the Crop All-Star Game, where he finished with six points and four rebounds. And, quiet honestly, we expected a little bit more out of him in this camp. Cottrell is not a very tough customer, but he runs the court extremely well, has good length and athleticism, and is active around the basket, plus he continues to gain confidence and keeps getting better every time we see him play. Cunningham probably should be higher on this list based on the fact that he turned in the third highest individual scoring performance in the camp with 24 points on Saturday night. But he only had five points the only time that I saw him play, which was on Friday night, he left camp early and did not play in any of the all-star games, and these ranking are supposed to be a reflection of what I saw and not how many points somebody scored. As for Cunningham's game, he's more of a slasher than a shooter and he makes a living using his quickness and athleticism to attack the basket and finish off transition. Hill is like a jack-of-all-trades, but he laid an egg with zero points and 0-8 field goals in the Next 20 Cream of the Crop All-Star Game. Isaacs was one of the unsung heroes in the camp, as he showed plenty of court savvy and used his speed and quickness to penetrate and dish and get his teammates involved, and more than hold his own while playing against guys three and four years older. Kyman was one of the best outside shooters in the camp, as is evident by the fact that he knocked down 3-3 treys and finished with 11 points in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 All-Star Game. However, he lacks speed and quickness and was a major liability at the defensive end.
